Artist Statement
I imagine a reality where computers are squishy and porous rather than solid and absolute. My work embraces queer theory to challenge the ways in which today’s technologies reinforce norms. Conversely, in my work I employ familiar, user-friendly features of our technological landscapes to understand abstract, complex identity-related concepts like social categorization and intersectionality. I blend watercolor, digital media, and performance art into interactive experiences that encourage people to pause and process the interconnected social and technological systems and devices they choose to engage with every day. My work breaks binary expectations by glitching between digital and physical, intangible and tangible, technological and human. Heavily influenced by my research and design processes, I explore each concept through extensive sketching and iterating. Inspired by modern computer interfaces, each artwork consists of sleek geometry and efficient compositions. The rainbow color palette throughout my work nods to the LGBTQ+ community’s vibrant spectrum of identities, and functionally frames the often-alienating and cutting-edge subject of technology as approachable and playful. I hope to encourage people to embrace a more freeing approach to both queer and digital realms.
