Queer Extensions | 2023
Queer people have always been here connecting. The HIV/AIDS epidemic, anti-LGBTQ+ legislation, and societal stigma have pulled the plug on countless cords. Queer individuals’ determination to extend, connect, and empower exponentially sparks new generations’ acceptance of non-heterosexual sexual orientations, non-binary gender identities, and non-traditional relationships.
I invite you to think of each colored cord as a person’s journey across time, each white power strip as a new generation, the black canvas as the normative society we currently live within. Pick a cord and follow it along its highs and lows, loops and turns. Does it overlap in relationships with other cords? How long did it live? What do its prongs and sockets look like? Was it able to come out? What might future cords look like?
Black canvas, about 5 feet wide by 2 feet tall. Rainbow extension cords are painted and sculpted in paths trailing up the wall
